Critical Issue Challenge
Cabo Verde is a rapidly growing tourism destination, with the islands of Sal and Boavista, receiving 57.1% and 25.9%, respectively, of international arrivals, driven mainly by European visitors. The tourism sector accounts for 25% of the national GDP and is a key source of employment. However, the reliance on mass tourism, particularly beach-focused, presents challenges in diversifying and expanding the tourism offering. Destinations like São Vicente, Santo Antão, and Santiago show potential for growth in eco and cultural tourism but require further development and innovation.
The current value chain, while extensive, lacks integration of digital solutions, sustainable practices, and local community inclusion. Tourism products must diversify to meet the changing demands of visitors seeking more authentic and environmentally conscious experiences. Governance involves multiple stakeholders, including local authorities, national tourism bodies, and international organizations. While collaboration exists, there’s a need for more coordinated efforts. The government is trying to focus on sustainable tourism through initiatives such as circular economy principles and green job creation.
The Futureshapers Program addresses these challenges by fostering innovation and sustainability across the tourism value chain. By equipping local businesses and communities with skills and tools to adapt to evolving market demands, the project contributes to national priorities of sustainable tourism development. It aims to create an inclusive, resilient tourism ecosystem, ensuring long-term benefits for both visitors and local communities while aligning with Cabo Verde’s broader development goals
