Smart Organic Waste Management for Tourism in Boa Vista

Context & Challenge Background

Boa Vista’s growing tourism sector faces critical environmental pressures, particularly regarding organic waste management in hotel operations. Remote island logistics make off-site waste processing expensive and environmentally taxing.

We are seeking innovative, decentralised, and scalable solutions for smart organic waste treatment tailored for medium- and large-sized hotel resorts in Boa Vista. The goal is to help prevent and reduce food waste, process unavoidable organic waste on-site, and/or transform organic waste into valuable local resources, reducing the amount ultimately sent to landfill.

  • Food Waste Prevention & Reduction: Software and tools to measure, analyze, and minimize kitchen waste through optimized purchasing, preparation, and portioning.
  • Decentralized On-Site Treatment: Modular hardware systems (such as dehydrators or biodigesters) engineered to process food waste directly at hotel hubs.
  • Smart Operational Monitoring: Low-maintenance technologies equipped with sensors to track performance and optimize treatment cycles.
  • Circular Economy Valorization: Solutions that convert processed waste into soil amendments, compost, or secondary products for Boa Vista’s landscape and agriculture.
  • Significant reduction in organic waste sent to regional landfills
  • Lower operational costs for hotels through optimised food usage
  • Encouragement of local context reuse, enabling hotels to repurpose food waste directly within island agricultural or landscaping systems
  • Stronger sustainability credentials, helping participating island hotels track better food management and eco-friendly practices

This call is open to startups, green-tech companies, commercial equipment vendors, and other technology providers capable of deploying decentralised organic waste management solutions suitable for tropical island environments. We are actively inviting solutions across three key innovation areas:

  • Food Waste Measurement, Tracking & AI Software – Digital tracking, computer vision, and operational analytics.
  • On-Site Organic Treatment – Hardware systems such as dehydrators and biodigesters suitable for hotel operations.
  • Composting & Biological Valorisation Systems – Technologies that turn organic waste into valuable soil amendments or local agricultural inputs.

Please note that the system’s software and user interface must be available in Portuguese for end users.
